Course content
Skills are developed by practising in a commercial barber shop or hair salon with genuine clients during the working day. The apprentice also attends off-the-job training sessions. To complete the qualification, students must demonstrate competence across a variety of tasks, details of these are below.
Mandatory:
Greeting clients; consultation with client; shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp; cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks; style and finish men’s hair; cut facial hair into shape; provide shaving services.

• Apprentices are employed by a local salon or barber shop and receive a wage
• Training is a mix of practical on-the-job, and off-the-job training
• Tutors from Mode provide ongoing support and assessment to students throughout their course, and this includes additional training in English and Maths if necessary
Costs and funding
This course costs £3000. The costs of training and assessment are usually paid for by government funding, with contributions from the employer. The course can also be paid for privately.
