Hairdressing Apprenticeship Standard

Delivered as a mix of working in a salon. In addition, attending college one day per week.

Entry requirements 

Aged 16+

Course length

18 to 24 months depending on previous experience and apprentice progress

Qualification

Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing)

Course content

Skills are developed by:

  • Working in a commercial hair salon and
  • College 1 day per week for off the job training

Qualification content:

Mandatory:

  • Greeting clients
  • Consultation
  • Shampoo and condition
  • Cut hair using a variety of techniques
  • Style and finish
  • Colour hair
  • Safe working practices

Optional:

  • Perming
  • Hair relaxation techniques
  • Hair extensions

End Point Assessment – EPA 

Practical observation

The apprentice needs to show competence. Firstly, completing a range of services.  In addition, they must meet industry standards and commercial timings.

Oral questioning

Apprentices will be assessed on:

  • consultation skills
  • communication skills
  • safe working practices
  • professionalism,values and behaviours

Additional information

  • Apprentices are employed by a local salon
  • Receive apprentice wage
  • Training is a mix of practice on-the-job
  • And off-the-job training
  • Tutors from Mode provide ongoing support
  • Assessment is throughout the course

Costs and funding

Hairdressing apprenticeship standard costs £7,000. The cost is usually government funded. In addition to contributions from your employer. However, the course can also be paid for privately.
