Government announces additional employer incentives

With apprenticeship starts at an all time low, the government have introduced some additional employer incentives to support employment of apprentices as we come out of lockdown.

The Schemes go live on 01 August 2020 but employers can only begin to claim  from 01 September 2020

There are two incentive claims dates; at 90 days and at 365 days. At both the 90 and 365 days points the employer can claim equal payments of £1000 (for 16-24 year olds where the incentive is £2,000 per learner) or £750 (for 25 and over learners where the incentive is £1,500 per learner)

There is no cap on the maximum number of learners nor incentive payments however Apprentices cannot have been employed by the employer within the preceding 6 months – 31st January 2020 and 31st July 2020

Employers will need to claim for the incentives via the Apprenticeship Services and payments will be made directly to the employer. The cap on the number of Apprentices for whom providers can reserve funding for employers on the Apprenticeship Service will increase from 15th July to 10 from the current level of 3

The current incentive of £1,000 for 16-18 year olds will still be paid via the training provider – in 2 payments of £500 each.
