National Minimum Wage Increases

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices will rise to £5.28 from 1 April 2023, an increase of 47 pence or 9.7 per cent.

Employers please ensure all apprentices wages are increased in line with updated rates below.

The hourly rate for National Minimum Wage depends on the age of the employee. Also whether they are an apprentice or not.

To qualify for the National Minimum Wage an employee must be of school leaving age.

To qualify for National Living Wage, employees must be at least 25. Those aged 24 and under will qualify for the National Minimum Wage.

Rules for Apprentices

Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate if they are either:

  • aged under 19
  • aged over 19 and in the first year of their apprenticeship

Apprentices who are over the age of 19. And have completed the first year of their apprenticeship, should be paid the national minimum wage for their age.
